Kent County Parks launched a native plant initiative at Townsend Park on October 15 and 16, which is to become an annual project called ?Plant Natives in the Park Day?. The kick-off was a huge success and our own River City Wild Ones members provided leadership and knowledge. Over 100 volunteers including Boy Scout groups and GVSU students were on hand to broadcast seed, plant native trees and add perennials to various locations around this beautiful park. Over 750 native perennial plugs were planted along a portion of Bear Creek. Twenty different native species will add colorful blooms for visitors and substantial pollen and nectar for our pollinators. The best part is that this type of work will continue each year at Townsend Park in Cannon Township?and hopefully lead to more native planting in many other county and city parks well!
