Notes:
Baptisia australis is a large bushy native perennial. Its flowers are deep blue on long upright spikey stems. This is a long-lived plant that spends its first few years developing its root system. Its blooms become increasingly showy as the plant matures into a shrub-like form around 4’ high. The attractive foliage is a bluish-green color that provides a dramatic background for other flowering plants. Blue wild indigo works well in more formal landscape designs and in naturalized settings. Grows easily in any average soil, Baptisia is quite drought tolerant, thrives in full sun, but also does well in partial shade. Leave a lot of room for this plant to grow. Divide this plant in fall or spring when the plant is dormant.
Attractive to many different pollinators, Baptisia australis also a host plant for the Hoary Edge butterflies, Frosted Elfin, and the Wild Indigo Duskywing.
